What is a Co-operative?
Co-operative housing emerged as an answer to restore community living and provide secure and affordable housing. Co-op housing involves people (i.e. Co-op members) coming together to make democratic decisions about how the Co-op is operated, so that every member has a say in the process, and everything runs as efficiently as possible.
How is a Co-Op Managed?
The resident members control the affairs of the Co-operative democratically. Each year the members elect from amongst themselves a Board of Directors to manage the Co-op on a day-to-day basis. Committees are set up to handle specific aspects of the Co-op’s business, such as maintenance, member selection and education, finance, communications, and social events. Major decisions on Co-op policies, budgets and housing charges are made of Members’ Meetings to which all members have the right and the responsibility to vote.
